The Gymnastics Federation of India (GFI) pioneer of Gymnastics in India came in existence in the year 1951 with the main aims to encourages, promotes, control, and popularizes the competitive Gymnastics in the Union of India. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) granted its affiliation to the Federation in the year of 1952. India, being the second most populated and the 7th Largest Country of the world, the Gymnastics Federation of India is an important Unit of the Federation of International gymnastics (FIG), Commonwealth Gymnastics Confederation (CGC) and Asian Gymnastics Union (AGU). The Federation was registered with the Registrar of Societies Delhi under Societies Registration Act, 1957 in the year 1966.
The Gymnastics Federation of India has become activity association with the Olympic Movement and has started participant in the Olympic Games, the Commonwealth Games, and the Asian Games and in the recognized International Championship/Cup/Competition in gymnastics.
The Gymnastics Federation of India is an affiliated Unit of the FIG since 1952; GFI is the Founder Member of the CGC and AGU since its inception. The prominent track record of the Federation with there International Origination of gymnastics is an asset for India. It is also regularly participant in the championship conducted by them, where Gymnastics are showing their skills and bringing laurels for the country.
The Gymnastics Federation of India stared activity from its inception when it sent two gymnasts Mr. Khushi Ram & Mr. Veer Singh to represent India in 1952 Helsinki Olympic Games. To develop Gymnastics in India, the expect coaches from soviet Union were invited. Gymnastics Federation of India has grown its size and stature as well its actives. In the year 1952, the National Championship was held in Men’s section only and National championship for women was included in the year 1962 at 8th National Gymnastics championship at Gwalior. Therefore Nationals were conducted in the boys & girls section in the year 1965-66 at Mumbai. First time National Championship for sub junior boys & girls was conducted in 1986 at karnal. The Federation has been keeping pace with FIG, CGC, and AGU and has included Rhythmic Gymnastics in the year 1989 and first National Rhythmic Gymnastics Championship was conducted at Kottayam in 1989. sub-junior sction in Rhythmic Gymnastics was introduced with 18th National RG Championship at Jodhpur in 2007 and mini-II (under 10 year) and Mini-I (under 8 year) were included in 19th National RG Championship at Jodhpur in 2008 to provide more opportunities to the young budding gymnastics to flourish. In 1966 Sports Aerobics also came under the banner of Gymnastics Federation of India and conducted first National Sports aerobics Gymnastics, Championship at Jallandhar in October 1997 with 39th senior National Championship. Later trampoline and General Gymnastics brought under ambit of above mentioned organization in 2002. Gymnastic Federation of India conducted the first National championship in Acrobatics & Trampoline at Hydrabad in October 2002 and junior section in Acrobatic included in 5th National Acrobatic & trampoline Championship held at thane in 2008 and continued till 2009. Thereafter, National Championship in Trampoline was conducted separately since 2010 and 6th National Championship in Trampoline & Tumbling was held at Chandigarh in August 2010. GFI also introduced under 10 years for boys with FX, TV and girls with FX, BB and under 12 years for boys with all apparatuses only in Artistic Gymnastics at 51th Sub-Junior National Gymnastics Championship at Chennai in December 2010 to tape the hidden talent of gymnastics. Presently there are 28 units affiliation with the Federation and they are regularly participant in the National Championships.
